Handmade Books

Presenting photographic works has always been a problem for me. Mounting and matting works for those images which might be exhibited, but these are only a proportion of images which I would deem to be 'successful'. An alternative approach, which I have used on and off over the years has been to collect images together in handmade books. The original books were actual silver gelatin prints dry mounted back-to-back and then comb bound. Later ones were digitallly printed on my desktop printer and handbound using a variety of methods. Recently I have become particularly fond of concertina books, tunnel books and photoboxes (tunnel books with rigid sides and a lid!).

Today, print-on-demand allows books to be made relatively simply. However, for me, hand-crafting the limited edition (usually a single copy) is much more satisfying.
